Introducing Lincoln

Ok, I promise after Lincoln, I will take a break from these introducing of friends, but I will still admit, I'm nothing without my various friends and their diverse music tastes. Yes, I find music on my own, and it is definitely a personal process to listen to music and fall in love with different artists, but bonds formed over a connection to music capture the importance of music in our lives. Onto Lincoln, who I've realized is my replacement for Jstreet - and if that sounds bad, it shouldn't is a huge compliment. Jstreet introduced me to a ton of indie music before I knew what I was doing, and without fail, he was someone I could count on to always attend a show, despite it being a Cat Power show on a Tuesday night. Lincoln is a fun person to attend a concert with and neither he nor I hide our love for certain female singers.

- give me one or two bands/songs that you listened to this last week:

Joanna Newsom - Pretty much the entire new album Have One on Me
Lincoln hits us right away with a female artist who ambitiously is putting out a triple album, but don't fret, it is 2 hours of harp-fueled ballads not limited by traditional indie progressions. The single, I would assume is "81" and I definitely recommend listening to it. Whether you want something to sleep to, something to listen to, or something to put on while writing a paper, Joanna Newsom really steps it up with her new album. A much more detailed review of her album can be found here.

YACHT - See Mystery Lights album
I don't know how to describe this music just yet - not musically the most complicated, but I think the group is more about a message and feeling... I guess their myspace might describe it better, as it has a pretty funny "about" section, which includes this writing:
"YACHT believes that to all people have a right to Free thought, Free expression, to write their own opinions freely and to counter, utter, and write upon the opinions of others. There is a difference between Free as in "Free Lunch" and Free as in "Liberated." YACHT believes that music and the Internet will become both in time."

- first cd you bought for yourself:
Nirvana - In Utero -- 1994

A classic, no more needs to be said.

- last live musical performance you went to:
Sunny Day Real Estate - 9:30 Club

This is a lie, mostly because I asked this question over a month ago and am only now posting these answers. I'd certainly read the "about" on the link above to learn more about the interesting story behind these veteran rockers. You can definitely hear those grunge-y roots with mid-90s angst. I wonder, Lincoln, how was their show?

- one show you are really looking forward to seeing this year:
Yeasayer

Might be the best show I've seen this year. We saw this April 3d, and I'm doing my review tomorrow. This band is a MUST-LISTEN.

  1. SDRE was awesome. They looked like they were having more fun playing music, and playing together, than almost any band I have seen. I had wanted to see them since I first started listening to them in 2001 and they finally came around. A lot of their newer stuff is not nearly as 'grunge' rooted as it is more prog. The band is full of really talented musicians. If you want to listen to a band that influences much of todays indie scene, they would be a great place to start.

  2. "bonds formed over a connection to music capture the importance of music in our lives" - this from a VH1 special?
