This weekend is my first bachelor party I'm attending/throwing, and it is for my college roommate, and for now we'll call him "Props." He is an interesting character and might even have a more diverse taste in music than me, and his tastes show that he is more than meets the eye. At first glance, he's another officer in the Army, and you wouldn't know that this kid loves everything from TV On The Radio to Tupac to Shakira and watches everything from One Tree Hill to The Wire to Wicker Park.
Props worked in a Tower records during college and probably has the largest collection of cds and dvds out of any of my friends. Ok maybe I just wanted to call him out for having questionable tastes in tv shows, but I would be lying if we didn't watch or listen to these things together or if I too had questionable choices in tv, movies and music. Who hasn't? I can admit that One Tree Hill has a good sound track on the episodes. In any case, "Props" is a great kid, and his musical tastes really prove how he can get along with anyone.
In addition to a few of those above links (which some are worth listening to!), I wanted to honor him with this post. Although I'm sure he will be a recurring character, I wanted to briefly share a few things we listened to while living together in college right now:
If anyone has watched the great TV show Friday Night Lights (or has watched the movie), the are familiar with the experimental and all-instrumental band "Explosions in the Sky." Their unique music is composed of three guitars and a drum set keeping you tied into a wide range of notes and progressions, and everything really focuses on a strong build up of sound. Despite all instrumentals, you feel a powerful and emotional connection to these songs. Senior year, their newest ablum "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" was my go-to for studying and sleeping. Props really put me onto this band and we would watch FNL together a lot, but his documentary of ROTC shows the poignancy of this band - their songs could really fit into any serious documentary. Please check it out, it is powerful stuff!
I can't get away from talking about Props without some hip-hop. From Seattle, he really got into Blue Scholars which is a cool duo that hit you with some intelligent lyrics. I can't forget to mention another favorite of Props, which is Murs (a member of Living Legends) who's smooth nature meshes well with his uplifting opinions. I will put out Prop's favorite song which is a more serious and emotional ballad, and another favorite of mine, which is a more fun song.
Ok, I'm still working on making posts smaller, and I'm giving y'all a lot of music this Friday, but... it's Friday! And... high likelihood this bachelor party weekend will keep me from posting tomorrow or the next day. Looking forward to your thoughts on this music!

This is why I love blogs. You can do so much with them: spread the word on good music, help others learn through experience, come out of the closet to the public and ruin this poor man's wedding. The possibilities are endless!!! P.S. solid, solid music choices by the way..... and I've never seen the Friday Night Lights show but I have heard good things. That is all.
