What a game-time decision. Everyone usually spends Superbowl Sunday eating copious amounts of unhealthy food with friends, laughing at commercials, developing "dip sweats" and, of course, watching football. I did all that, save until the 4th quarter when I left and trotted a few blocks away to see the second night of Chromeo.
Last April I wanted to write about them, but I decided I wouldn't do myself justice until I saw the Montreal-based duo live. Usually these guys will sell out immediately, which they did, but someone on the Business Casual tour had the foresight to add a second showing for Superbowl Sunday, and I decided on Saturday to buy a ticket. While crushing various dips before the show probably wasn't the best idea, Chromeo still exceeded all expectations. I'm glad I didn't go to a sold-out show -- much more room for sweet dance moves.
Chromeo is known for the playful combination of P-Thugg's keyboard/synth/talk box skills with a hip hop background, and Dave 1's guitar repeated guitar riffs and higher-pitched vocals. They two seemingly contrasting styles actually mesh really well, and they create modern feel and appeal to an 80s style (definitely enhanced by the three back up singers, dubbed the Chrom-etes). Going with a solid group of friends really made my night into a no frills, no holds barred dance party, that evoked a more dancey and pop Daft Punk. The high energy light show and fun loving crowd makes you almost understand why some people try to "enhance the experience," but I went sober and had a great time. Either way, you won't get overwhelmed as I felt when I saw Girl Talk live.
I'll go ahead and admit that after coming home, I had to take a shower. A good sign for a great concert experience.
